Tolstoy: Pierre vs Andrei Bolskonski

Filed under: Letters from Ionia — zankaon @ 12:36 pm

Tolstoy through his character Pierre in War and Peace novel admired the simple faith of the peasantry, as opposed to Andrei’s aristocratic indifference. Perhaps he saw this attitude of the peasantry as extraordinary in ordinary ways. Likewise Tolstoy’s literary works, as well as his concern for the peasantry, on his estate, might be considered as not only extraordinary in ordinary ways, but also ordinary in extraordinary ways. Two aspects of Tolstoy’s ethos (rendered through his characters) in regards to peasantry vs his aristocratic literary self?
